Mari Akiri works at the intersection of photography and painting.

The starting point is often a real person or a concrete motif. Through processing and interpretation, the documentary shifts towards something more existential. What is first a portrait becomes a study in presence, identity and boundary.

In her work, the raw and the controlled meet. The body is both individual and symbol. The gaze is both personal and universal.

Mari Akiri does not explore what we look like.
